CME Group, the world's largest futures exchange, is planning to extend round-the-clock trading to its 100-ounce silver futures contract, potentially starting in September. The move comes after the exchange saw strong weekend activity in its newer 1-ounce gold futures, which it launched earlier this year.

The exchange said the silver contract could trade 24 hours a day, seven days a week, pending regulatory review. If approved, it would mark a significant shift for a market that traditionally pauses on weekends and during certain holidays.

Why CME is making this move

CME has been testing whether smaller, retail-friendly futures contracts can attract more trading during traditionally quiet hours. Since it enabled round-the-clock sessions for 1-ounce gold futures on July 24, more than 53,000 contracts have traded during weekend sessions, representing about $219 million in notional value. CME says that's the largest weekend liquidity pool ever seen in gold futures.

The success of the gold contract suggests there is real demand from everyday investors who want to trade precious metals outside of regular market hours. Many retail investors work during the day and find it difficult to participate in futures markets that only operate during standard business hours.

Silver, like gold, is often seen as a safe-haven asset. Investors tend to buy it during times of economic uncertainty or when they worry about inflation. The Perth Mint recently reported higher gold and silver sales as investors sought safe havens, underscoring the ongoing interest in precious metals.

What 24/7 trading means for investors

For individual investors, the move could make it easier to react to news that breaks outside regular trading hours. Currently, if a major geopolitical event happens on a Saturday, futures traders often have to wait until Sunday evening or Monday morning to adjust their positions. With 24/7 trading, they could respond immediately.

However, round-the-clock trading also brings risks. Markets that are open all the time can see thinner liquidity during off-peak hours, which can lead to wider bid-ask spreads and more volatile price swings. Investors who trade during these hours need to be aware that their orders may be filled at less favorable prices than during peak trading times.

CME's move is part of a broader trend toward longer trading hours across financial markets. Many stock exchanges have extended their sessions, and cryptocurrency markets have always traded 24/7. The exchange is likely hoping that offering silver around the clock will attract more retail participation and increase overall trading volumes.

What to watch next

The key date to watch is September, when CME hopes to launch the extended hours for silver futures, assuming regulators give the green light. Investors should also keep an eye on whether CME expands 24/7 trading to other contracts, such as its larger gold futures or other metals.

For now, the focus is on silver. The 100-ounce silver futures contract is a standard product used by both institutional and retail traders. If the 24/7 experiment works for silver, it could pave the way for more metals to trade around the clock.

In the meantime, investors who are interested in precious metals should consider how extended trading hours might affect their strategies. Those who value flexibility may welcome the change, while others may prefer to stick to traditional trading hours to avoid the risks of thin liquidity.

As always, it's important to understand the mechanics of any futures contract before trading. Silver futures can be volatile, and the added complexity of 24/7 trading means investors should be extra cautious about managing risk.

CME's announcement is a clear signal that the exchange is betting on retail investors to drive growth in precious metals trading. Whether that bet pays off will depend on how many traders embrace the round-the-clock model.
