European markets got a double dose of news on Tuesday as cooling inflation in the eurozone's two largest economies coincided with a flurry of deal activity that sent shares of EasyJet and Vodafone sharply higher.
France's consumer price index (CPI) rose 1.8% in June from a year earlier, down from 2.4% in May, according to statistics agency INSEE. Germany's inflation also eased, with CPI coming in at 2.3% in June, compared with 2.6% the previous month, data from Destatis showed. Both readings were slightly below economists' expectations, reinforcing the view that price pressures across the eurozone are gradually subsiding.
What Cooling Inflation Means for Investors
For everyday investors, lower inflation is generally a positive signal. When inflation falls, central banks like the European Central Bank (ECB) have more room to cut interest rates or at least hold them steady rather than raising them further. Lower rates can reduce borrowing costs for companies and consumers, potentially boosting corporate profits and stock prices.
The latest data adds to a growing list of signs that the ECB's aggressive rate-hiking cycle may be nearing its end. The central bank has raised rates at a record pace over the past year to combat inflation that peaked above 10% in late 2022. While ECB officials have signaled they are not done yet, cooler inflation readings give them more flexibility. Investors will be watching closely for the ECB's next policy decision in July for any hints of a pause.
However, inflation remains above the ECB's 2% target, and core inflation—which strips out volatile food and energy prices—has been stickier. The path to lower rates is not guaranteed, and markets could be disappointed if inflation proves more persistent than expected.
Deal Talk Drives Stock Moves
While the inflation data provided a macro backdrop, the biggest market moves came from corporate dealmaking. Shares of EasyJet surged after Apollo Global Management topped an earlier bid from Castlelake for the British low-cost airline. Apollo's offer values EasyJet at around £5.7 billion, according to reports, setting the stage for a potential takeover battle. The news sent EasyJet's stock up more than 10% in London trading.
Apollo, a US private equity giant, has been active in European deals recently. In a separate transaction, it agreed to buy a minority stake in Bayer's contraceptives unit for €3 billion. The EasyJet bid comes as the airline industry recovers from the pandemic, with travel demand rebounding strongly. However, airlines still face headwinds from higher fuel costs and labor shortages.
Meanwhile, Vodafone shares jumped after the telecoms group announced the sale of a 5% stake in its Vodafone Ziggo joint venture for $5.95 billion. The deal, which involves selling shares to a consortium of investors, will help Vodafone reduce its debt and focus on its core markets. Vodafone has been restructuring its business, including selling its Spanish and Italian operations, as it seeks to streamline operations.
What It Means for Your Portfolio
For investors, the combination of cooling inflation and active dealmaking creates both opportunities and risks. Lower inflation could support broader market gains, particularly in rate-sensitive sectors like real estate and utilities. But the deal activity highlights that corporate events—takeovers, stake sales, and mergers—can drive significant stock moves independent of the broader economy.
Investors should be cautious about chasing stocks that have already jumped on deal news, as takeover premiums can evaporate if deals fall through. However, the increased M&A activity is often a sign of confidence in the economic outlook, as companies are more willing to make big bets when they see growth ahead.
Looking ahead, markets will focus on upcoming ECB meetings and further inflation data from other eurozone countries. The ECB's next rate decision is due in late July, and any shift in language could move markets. For now, the cooling inflation and deal flow provide a cautiously optimistic backdrop for European equities.
