Investment bank RBC Capital Markets has started covering 10x Genomics, and its initial take paints a company moving in two very different directions. On one side, 10x dominates the fast-growing field of spatial biology. On the other, its older single-cell business looks set to tread water for years.

RBC says 10x leads what it calls "high-plex" spatial molecular profiling, a technology that lets researchers see where genes and proteins are active inside intact tissue samples. The less encouraging part of RBC's assessment concerns 10x's single-cell business. This technology lets scientists analyze the genetic material of individual cells, rather than averaging across a whole tissue sample. It was a major growth driver for 10x in earlier years.
But RBC expects that segment to stay "mostly flat" over the next five years. That suggests the market may be maturing, with competition intensifying and many labs already equipped with the necessary instruments.
