Reddit's stock took a hit after the company warned that Google's shift toward AI-generated search answers is reducing the number of people clicking through to its site. The company said the change could cut its daily active visitors by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter, a warning that rattled investors and raised fresh questions about how much control Reddit really has over its own audience.

What's happening with Google search?

Google has been rolling out AI-generated summaries at the top of its search results. These "AI Overviews" are designed to answer a user's question directly on the results page, rather than sending them to a list of links. For many queries, that means fewer people actually click through to websites below the summary.

Reddit says it's still showing up in Google results, but the nature of those results has changed. More searchers are getting their answers from the AI box and skipping the click. That's a problem for Reddit because search referrals have long been a major source of new visitors. When those clicks dry up, fewer people land on Reddit, which typically means fewer logged-in sessions and fewer pageviews.

This isn't just a Reddit problem. Other sites that rely heavily on Google traffic, including some of Reddit's peers, have reported similar pressure as Google pushes AI answers. The broader shift is part of a larger trend where search engines are becoming answer engines, and that has big implications for any business that depends on referral traffic.

Why traffic matters for Reddit's bottom line

For a platform like Reddit, traffic is the fuel for its advertising business. More visitors mean more pages viewed, which means more ad impressions to sell. When traffic falls, ad inventory shrinks, and that can put pressure on both the number of ads sold and the price advertisers are willing to pay.

Reddit's warning suggests the company could see a meaningful drop in its daily active user numbers in the final months of the year. A low double-digit percentage decline is not a small blip. It's the kind of shift that can quickly turn into an earnings problem.

Here's why: many of Reddit's costs don't move down as fast as traffic. Infrastructure, data center costs, and headcount are largely fixed in the short term. Even if revenue dips, those expenses stay relatively steady, squeezing profit margins.

Reddit highlighted that imbalance by extending its cloud deal with Google through 2029 and committing to spend $580 million over three years. That makes a big chunk of its cost base sticky, meaning it can't easily cut costs to offset a traffic slowdown.

What it means for investors

For investors, the warning is a reminder that Reddit's growth is partly dependent on platforms it doesn't control. If Google keeps redesigning search around AI, Reddit could keep losing referral traffic. That raises a bigger question: does Reddit truly "own" its audience, or is it renting attention from search engines?

When growth looks less dependable, investors often reprice stocks. High-valuation companies, in particular, can see their price-to-earnings multiples compress when the market starts to doubt the sustainability of their growth. Analysts may also cut profit forecasts sharply in response to traffic concerns, which can amplify the stock's decline.

That said, Reddit is not standing still. The company has been working on its own AI features and trying to make the platform more engaging for logged-in users. It has also been exploring ways to reduce its reliance on search referrals, though those efforts are still in early stages.

For everyday investors, the key takeaway is that Reddit's fortunes are tied to the broader shift in how people find information online. As Google and other search engines lean more into AI answers, companies that depend on search traffic will need to adapt or risk losing a key growth engine.

The coming quarters will show whether Reddit can offset the traffic decline with stronger engagement, new ad products, or other initiatives. Until then, the market is likely to keep a close eye on any signs of further traffic erosion.

Looking ahead

Reddit's warning is a clear signal that the AI search transition is having real-world consequences for publishers and platforms. It's a story that's likely to continue unfolding as Google refines its AI features and other search engines follow suit.

For investors, the lesson is to pay attention to where a company's traffic comes from. If a business relies heavily on referrals from a single platform, that's a risk worth watching. Reddit's experience with Google is a case study in how quickly that risk can materialize.
