Saudi telecom operator Etihad Etisalat, better known as Mobily, received a ratings boost from United Securities after reporting a modest profit increase for the third quarter of 2026. The brokerage upgraded the stock to “Strong Buy” while reiterating a target price of 72 Saudi riyals per share.

Mobily’s net income for the quarter rose 1% to 925 million riyals (about $247 million), a steady result that appears to have met analyst expectations. The upgrade suggests that United Securities sees the company’s performance as stable enough to warrant a more bullish stance, even in a competitive telecom market.

What is Mobily?

Mobily is one of Saudi Arabia’s largest telecommunications providers, offering mobile, broadband, and enterprise services. It competes directly with stc (Saudi Telecom Company) and Zain KSA. The company is listed on the Saudi stock exchange (Tadawul) and is part of the broader Gulf telecom sector, which has been investing heavily in 5G networks and digital services.

The telecom industry in Saudi Arabia is mature, with high mobile penetration and intense competition. Growth often comes from data services, business solutions, and cost efficiency rather than adding new subscribers. In this environment, even a 1% profit increase can be seen as a positive sign, especially if it reflects disciplined cost management or improved revenue mix.

Why the upgrade matters

Upgrades from brokerage firms can influence investor sentiment and trading activity. A “Strong Buy” rating is the most bullish recommendation a broker can give, signaling that the analyst believes the stock will outperform the market or its peers over the coming months.

The reiterated target price of SAR 72 is also important. If the stock is trading below that level, the target implies potential upside. However, investors should note that target prices are not guarantees; they are estimates based on the analyst’s assumptions about future earnings, industry trends, and macroeconomic conditions.

For everyday investors, this news is a signal that at least one professional research team sees value in Mobily’s shares. But it’s worth remembering that upgrades and downgrades are just one piece of the puzzle. A single analyst’s view should not be the sole basis for an investment decision.

What it means for investors

For those holding Mobily shares, the upgrade is a reassuring sign that the company’s steady performance is being recognized. For potential buyers, it may add confidence, but it’s wise to consider the broader picture: telecom stocks often appeal to income-focused investors because of their dividend yields, but they can also face headwinds from regulatory changes, technology shifts, and economic cycles.

Mobily’s results come at a time when other companies in the region are also reporting earnings. For example, Banque Saudi Fransi saw its profit rise 11.5% in Q3, and Hitachi Construction Machinery raised its profit forecast after a strong first half. These reports suggest that corporate earnings in the region and globally are mixed, with some sectors thriving while others face challenges.

Investors should also keep an eye on external factors that could affect telecom stocks, such as oil prices. Saudi Arabia’s economy is closely tied to energy markets, and any major disruption, like the Houthi strike on a Saudi refinery that stoked supply fears, can have ripple effects across the market.

Looking ahead

Mobily’s next earnings report will be closely watched to see if the company can maintain its momentum. Analysts will also look for updates on 5G adoption, enterprise contracts, and any cost-saving initiatives. The telecom sector in Saudi Arabia is expected to remain competitive, but companies with strong balance sheets and clear strategies are likely to fare better.

For now, the upgrade from United Securities is a positive note in a steady quarter. As always, investors should do their own research and consider their own financial goals before acting on any analyst recommendation.
