Vancouver-based mineral explorer Visionary Metals has started drilling at its King Solomon nickel-and-copper project in Wyoming, marking the beginning of its 2026 exploration program. The company said it has mobilized a diamond drill rig and is conducting ground geophysics at the site in Fremont County, with the work backed by Teck American, a subsidiary of major Canadian miner Teck Resources.

The initial phase of drilling will test three “high-conductance” targets — areas that show strong electrical conductivity in geophysical surveys. These signals often indicate the presence of sulfide-rich rock, which is where nickel and copper are commonly found. The company is also using a method called fixed-loop time-domain electromagnetic (FLTEM) surveying, which helps map conductive bodies deep underground.

What is King Solomon?

King Solomon is an early-stage exploration project focused on nickel and copper, two metals that are in growing demand for electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy infrastructure, and grid expansion. Nickel adds strength and corrosion resistance to stainless steel and is a key component in lithium-ion batteries, while copper is essential for wiring, motors, and charging networks.

The project is located in Wyoming, a state not typically associated with major base metal mining, but which has seen increased interest in recent years due to its geological potential and supportive mining regulations. Visionary Metals holds a 4,500-meter drill budget for the 2026 season, split between King Solomon and the nearby Tin Cup project, which is also part of the company’s exploration portfolio.

Teck American’s involvement is notable. Teck is one of the world’s largest diversified mining companies, with significant operations in copper, zinc, and steelmaking coal. Its backing of a junior explorer like Visionary Metals provides not only funding but also technical expertise and credibility, which can be crucial for early-stage projects seeking to attract further investment.

Why drilling matters

Drilling is the first major step in determining whether a mineral deposit is economically viable. Before drilling, explorers rely on surface sampling and geophysics to identify promising targets. Drilling then physically extracts rock cores, which are analyzed for metal content. If results are positive, the company can begin to estimate a resource — the amount of metal that could potentially be mined.

For investors, drilling results are a key catalyst for junior mining stocks. Positive intercepts can send share prices higher, while disappointing results can lead to sharp declines. However, it’s important to remember that exploration is inherently risky: many drill programs fail to find economic mineralization, and even successful discoveries take years and significant capital to develop into producing mines.

What it means for investors

For everyday investors, this news is a reminder of the speculative nature of early-stage mining exploration. Visionary Metals is a small company with a market value likely in the tens of millions of dollars, and its fortunes hinge on the outcome of its drilling. The backing of Teck American provides some validation, but it does not guarantee success.

Investors should watch for the release of assay results from the initial holes, which could come in the coming weeks or months. Positive results could boost the stock, while negative results could weigh on it. It’s also worth noting that the broader metals market plays a role: if copper and nickel prices are strong, explorers tend to attract more interest and funding. Recent market moves have seen copper and zinc slip as the dollar strengthened, which could temper enthusiasm for base metal explorers in the near term.

For those looking to understand the sector, it’s helpful to follow other exploration stories. For instance, DPM Metals expanded its drilling in Serbia after finding copper-gold north of its resource, and Titan Minerals' Ecuador drilling boosted confidence in its Dynasty gold resource. These examples illustrate how drilling results drive junior mining valuations.

Visionary Metals’ program is still in its early stages, and the company has not provided a timeline for when results will be released. Investors should approach such news with patience and a clear understanding of the risks involved. As with all speculative investments, it’s wise to only allocate money you can afford to lose and to diversify across multiple projects and sectors.

In the meantime, the start of drilling at King Solomon is a positive step for Visionary Metals, and the involvement of Teck American adds a layer of institutional support that could help the project advance. Whether it ultimately leads to a mine remains to be seen, but for now, the exploration story is underway.
