ASX-listed gold explorer Brightstar Resources has identified 11 new priority drill targets at its Sandstone Gold Project in Western Australia, with drilling lined up to begin this month. The company also reaffirmed that it still expects to deliver an updated mineral resource for its Two Mile Hill deposit and a pre-feasibility study (PFS) during the current quarter.

Targets along a proven corridor

In an update to the ASX, Brightstar said the new targets sit along the Two Mile Hill–Bull Oak Corridor, the same geological trend that hosts its Two Mile Hill and Bull Oak deposits. Those two deposits already account for roughly 1.8 million ounces of gold, about half of Sandstone's total mineral resource of 3.6 million ounces.

Because the targets are located on the same trend as known deposits, any new discoveries are more likely to fit into the existing geological model rather than represent a completely new find. That can make exploration more efficient, as the company already understands the local rock formations and mineralisation patterns.

What is a pre-feasibility study?

A pre-feasibility study is a detailed technical and financial assessment of a mining project. It evaluates factors such as mining methods, processing options, capital costs, operating costs and potential returns. While it is not the final step — a full feasibility study typically follows — a PFS is a key milestone that helps investors gauge whether a project is economically viable.

For Brightstar, completing a PFS for Sandstone would be a significant step toward potentially developing the project. It would also provide more clarity on the project's scale, costs and timeline, which are important considerations for any mining operation.

Why this matters for investors

For everyday investors, exploration updates like this are a reminder that gold miners' share prices often react to news about resource growth and project development progress. New drill targets are encouraging, but they are not the same as proven reserves. The real test will come when drilling results are released and when the updated resource and PFS are published.

Investors should also keep in mind that exploration is inherently uncertain. Even well-placed targets can fail to deliver economic grades. However, the fact that the new targets are along a corridor with known mineralisation reduces some of that risk compared to wildcat drilling in unexplored areas.

The company's ability to stick to its stated timeline — drilling this month and the resource/PFS this quarter — will be closely watched. Delays are common in the mining sector, so meeting these deadlines would be a positive signal.

Broader gold market context

Gold prices have been volatile in recent years, influenced by inflation, interest rates and geopolitical uncertainty. For gold explorers and miners, the metal's price directly affects the economics of their projects. A higher gold price can make lower-grade deposits viable, while a lower price can force companies to reassess their plans.

Brightstar's Sandstone project is located in a well-established gold mining region in Western Australia, which has a long history of gold production and a supportive regulatory environment. That adds to the project's appeal, as infrastructure and skilled labour are often more readily available than in more remote locations.

What to watch next

Investors will be looking for several things in the coming weeks and months:

  • Drilling results: The first batch of assays from the new targets could provide an early indication of whether the company is onto something.
  • Updated resource estimate: An increase in the Two Mile Hill resource would be a positive development, potentially boosting the project's overall value.
  • Pre-feasibility study: The PFS will provide the most detailed look yet at the project's economics, including capital costs and potential returns.

As with any mining stock, investors should consider the risks, including commodity price fluctuations, operational challenges and the possibility that exploration results may not meet expectations. It's always wise to do your own research and consider how a stock fits into your overall portfolio.

For those interested in other exploration stories, Golden Horse's plan to spin out its Sorrel copper project is another example of how companies structure their assets. And for a look at how drilling plans are funded, Dune Oil's recent capital raise offers a useful comparison.
