First Abu Dhabi Bank Securities has reaffirmed its buy rating and AED 3.80 price target on NMDC Energy, even after the contractor's third-quarter profit fell well short of expectations. The brokerage, a unit of First Abu Dhabi Bank, said the miss reflects higher logistics, insurance, and fuel costs that are squeezing margins across the business.

In a first-look note published Friday and cited by MT Newswires, FAB Securities said NMDC Energy is still working through operational snags and a tougher regional backdrop. Revenue slipped 2.3% year-on-year to AED 4.7 billion, slightly below the broker's AED 4.81 billion estimate, though it rose 4.7% quarter-on-quarter as the company executed its backlog—work it has already won but not yet delivered.

The bigger hit came on the bottom line. Attributable net profit fell to AED 168 million, well under the AED 243 million FAB had forecast. The broker blamed cost overruns in logistics, insurance, and fuel, which have become a recurring theme for engineering and construction firms operating in a volatile environment.

Why margins matter more than revenue

For companies like NMDC Energy, project pricing is often locked in at the tender stage. That means unexpected jumps in shipping, insurance, or fuel costs tend to hit profits first, before any adjustment can be passed on to clients. Revenue can look steady while margins quietly deteriorate.

That's why FAB Securities is focusing less on the top line and more on whether the profit miss is a timing issue or a structural problem. The broker said management is cautiously counting on a typical year-end pickup, when projects close and final settlements get booked. Claims, change orders, and final negotiations can lift margins late in a project's life, providing a cushion that wasn't available during the quarter.

But FAB warned that uncertainty could keep fourth-quarter improvements limited. If regional instability delays settlements or keeps costs elevated, the rebound could shift into later quarters rather than disappear entirely. For investors, that makes updates on margins and project closures more market-moving than steady revenue execution.

What it means for investors

The AED 3.80 price target now hinges on whether the profit miss was a one-off or a sign of deeper pressure. If the year-end close-out recovery materialises, the stock could still reach the target. If not, the valuation may need to be reassessed.

For everyday investors, the key takeaway is that engineering and construction stocks often trade on backlog and pipeline strength, but near-term earnings can be volatile. NMDC Energy's large backlog, growing pipeline, and fresh awards support the longer-term story, according to FAB. But the path to those gains may be bumpier than the top-line numbers suggest.

Investors should watch for signs of margin recovery in the coming quarters, as well as any commentary on cost trends and project close-outs. Similar dynamics have played out across the sector, as seen in Trent's recent earnings, where profit growth was driven by margin improvement, and in Syngenta's latest results, where margins held despite a sales decline.

For now, FAB's stance suggests the brokerage sees the profit miss as a temporary setback rather than a fundamental break. But the uncertainty around fourth-quarter improvements means the stock could remain volatile until there's clearer evidence that costs are stabilising.

As always, investors should weigh the risks and consider their own time horizon. A buy rating from one broker doesn't guarantee performance, and the energy sector's exposure to global shipping and fuel prices adds an extra layer of unpredictability.
