Australian data center operator NEXTDC paused trading in its shares on Monday after a delay in getting grid power to its M3 facility in Melbourne raised questions about its fiscal 2027 outlook. The company had previously forecast underlying EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) of A$385 million to A$410 million for that year.

In a statement, NEXTDC said it would update investors within two days, but noted that its board had not yet met to decide whether the delay changes its guidance. To stay on top of disclosure rules, it requested a trading halt—a standard move when a company is assessing material information that could affect its share price.

Why power is the lifeblood of a data center

For data center operators, electricity is not just an operating cost—it's the trigger that turns a built facility into a revenue-generating one. A data center without power is like a factory without a conveyor belt: it can't run the servers that customers pay for. The M3 site in Melbourne is one of NEXTDC's key projects, and any delay in energizing it could push back the start of customer contracts and, in turn, the revenue those contracts would bring.

The issue appears to be outside NEXTDC's direct control. According to Citi, a global investment bank, the electricity distributor Jemena has paused work on the transmission lines that would supply power to M3. That suggests the delay stems from grid infrastructure, not from NEXTDC's own construction or operations.

This is not an isolated problem. Across the industry, data center developers are wrestling with power availability. As Microsoft pulled out of a UK data center project partly due to power delays, and some companies are turning to gas power islands to speed up electricity supply, the challenge of getting reliable grid power is becoming a recurring theme.

What this means for NEXTDC's guidance

NEXTDC's fiscal 2027 guidance of A$385-410 million in underlying EBITDA was set before this delay came to light. The company's board will need to assess whether the M3 delay is significant enough to alter that forecast. If the delay is short, the impact might be minimal. But if it stretches on, it could push revenue from M3 into a later period, potentially lowering the midpoint of the guidance range.

Investors are likely to focus on two things when trading resumes: how long the delay will last, and whether NEXTDC can make up the lost time elsewhere. The company has not yet provided a timeline, so the market will be watching for any update on Jemena's work schedule.

This situation also highlights a broader risk for the data center sector. As AI data center bonds have slid on doubts about revenue covering debt, and chip stocks have fallen on AI data-center cost concerns, investors are increasingly scrutinizing the gap between construction plans and actual revenue generation. Power delays are a prime example of how that gap can widen.

What investors should watch next

For everyday investors, the key takeaway is that data center stocks carry execution risk beyond just building the facility. Power availability, grid connections, and utility timelines are factors that can slip, and those slips can affect earnings forecasts.

NEXTDC's trading halt is a reminder that companies sometimes pause trading to ensure all investors have equal access to material information. When trading resumes, the market will react to the company's update—whether that's a reassurance that guidance is intact or a revision to the numbers.

It's also worth noting that the delay appears to be outside NEXTDC's control, which could soften the negative impact. But in a sector where demand for AI data centers is setting records, any hiccup in supply can still spook investors.

NEXTDC said it will provide an update within two days. Until then, the shares remain halted, and investors will be waiting to see whether the M3 power delay is a minor blip or a sign of bigger infrastructure challenges ahead.
